The competition is stiff in this category, with Ellie Goulding, Cheryl Cole and Paloma Faith all in the running to lift the gong.
Best of British: Ellie Goulding is one of the female artists up for the gong
It’s set to be handbags at dawn on February 15 as the five ladies nominated for the British Female Solo Artist gong battle it out to lift the gong at this year’s Brit Awards.
Cheryl Cole, Ellie Goulding, Rumer, Paloma Faith and Laura Marling are all in the running for the prestigious title, after enjoying a strong year in the music industry.
The nation’s sweetheart Cheryl enjoyed another successful stint in the music business last year, with 2010 marking the release of Cole’s second album, Messy Little Raindrops, which went to number one in the UK charts. Her first song from the album, Promise This, also shot to the top spot in the singles charts.
The singer is also nominated in the British Single category at this year’s Brit Awards.
Singer-songwriter Rumer (Sarah Prentice) has also enjoyed a strong year, with her album Seasons of My Soul hitting the number 3 spot in the UK charts.
In 2010 alone the Pakistan-born performer – whose voice has been likened to that of Karen Carpenter - was embraced by a number of big names in the industry, performing alongside jazz star Jamie Cullum at the Royal Variety performance, invited as Elton John’s special guest at the BBC Electric Proms, and appearing on Later with Jools Holland.
Ellie Goulding continues to be a force to be reckoned with, with the 24-year-old re-releasing her album Lights the newly titled Bright Lights. The album includes six new tracks from the singer including a cover of Elton John’s Your Song, which became her highest charting single to date, reaching number two in the UK singles charts in November 2010.
Ellie, who won the Critics' Choice award at the 2010 BRIT Awards (a title which this year belongs to rising star Jessie J), has also been nominated in the British Breakthrough Artist category.
Folk singer Laura Marling could also be in with a good shot of lifting the coveted award. The English performer had both her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim and her second album I Speak Because I Can nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
Finally, quirky singer Paloma Faith, who shot to fame after the release of her debut album Do Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?, in 2009 is also in the running for the gong.
The redhead’s debut album managed to stay in the charts for over 40 weeks, and she revealed last year that she’s currently working on new music – so music insiders are no doubt waiting with baited breath for the new material.
